How Makeup Should Look in Wedding Photography

Why makeup that looks perfect in the mirror can fall apart on camera — and what to do about it.

The mirror and the camera see different faces. Bridal makeup has to satisfy both.

Flash flattens everything

A direct flash removes shadow. Contour that looked subtle in daylight disappears entirely; the face reads flat and wide. This is why wedding-day makeup carries more structure than everyday makeup — it is compensating for light that removes structure.

SPF causes flashback

High-SPF products and heavy silica powders can reflect flash straight back, leaving a white cast across the face in photographs. It is the single most common makeup problem in wedding albums. The fix is simple: no SPF in the base on the day, and a photograph test during the trial with flash on.

Video is more honest than stills

Stills can be retouched. Video cannot, really. It shows texture, it shows where powder has settled, and it shows movement. Makeup built for video is built thinner and set more selectively.

The trial test

At every trial I take two photographs: one in daylight by a window, one with direct flash. If the base holds in both, it will hold on the day.
